Cutting Through Time
Originally an architect at the Ministry of Works, Cyril Power entered a collaborative partnership with artist, Sybil Andrews, focussing on printmaking techniques and poster art at their studio in Hammersmith. The couple became famous for their dynamic, modernist linocuts that were bursting with movement and vivid colour and which summed up the hectic interwar years by also drew on medieval arts and traditions that were in danger of being forgotten. ‘Cyril & Sybil’ traces the history of this partnership within the context of the emerging schools of Futurism, Surrealism and abstraction, and captures the thrill of the new era as it valiantly shone in the face of the looming shadows of war.
